Tenets
Research Photography: Working at the intersection of art and science.
Visual Research: We use the camera to explore questions of people, places, and a changing world through visual observation and documentation.
Defined Methods: every projects approaches a question with some defined method, which takes from scientific method when appropriate, while including the artists’ unique approach and place within the process as an observer.
Respect for Context: We appreciate that photographers have always employed the camera as a tool of investigation. Our approach spans genres that include photojournalism, documentary work, street photography, visual anthropology, and technical photography. In addition to initiating new projects, Research Photography is informed by our many peers and predecessors. To incorporate these ideas, a discussion of selected historic and contemporary photo projects is included in our blog.
Truth in Photography: Photography stands out among art mediums for its ability to objectively record the physical world through direct conversion of reflected light into a fixed image. Of course, there are limits to the objectivity, but we respect that there is some truth to the photographic image, and this honest representation we seek to preserve. Therefore, Research Photography’ avoids any deceptive editing practices, unjustified collaging or retouching, and rejects the use of generative AI in photographic methods.
